RESEARCH REVIEW
Dr. Vrbsky's recent research, sponsored by NSF, is in the area of real-time databases. She has designed and implemented an approximate query processor that produces monotonically improving approximate answers to database queries. Approximate answers can be used if there is not enough time to retrieve and process all of the data for a query or if all of the data are not available. The proposed temporal data model for approximate query processing addresses the timing constraints and the temporal consistency constraints of real-time databases.
Another project involves the design of multilevel secure real-time database strategies which also consider the timing constraints and the temporal consistency constraints of real-time databases. The database security startegies are designed to trade off among the quality of the result, the time to process the result, the security and the temporal consistency of the data. These strategies are considered when exact answers are provided as well as when approximate answers are provided. The stratagies resulting from this work are applicable in may different settings and allow flexibility in securing real-time databases.
