Alabama Summer Computer Camps

2012 Camp Dates: Middle School (July 9-13); High School (July 16-20; July 23-27; July 30-August 3)

Registration update (added May 15, 2012):

• Week 1 of High School is now closed and waitlisted. We are no longer accepting HS-1 registration.
• Week 1 of Middle School is now closed and waitlisted. We are no longer accepting MS-1 registration.
• Weeks 2 and 3 of High School are also still open with rolling registration.

The University of Alabama Department of Computer Science within the College of Engineering will host a series of Computer Science camps from July 9th-August 3rd, 2012. For 2012, we extend our camp offerings with a week of middle school camp for commuters. High School students will also be given an option to stay in our dormitories as residential campers. Students will be taught multiple topics of Computer Science while learning to program a computer in several exciting contexts (e.g., game programming at the middle school camps; and robotics control and smartphone apps at the high school camps). The Computer Science camps are taught in a manner that encourages self-exploration across multiple projects.

Overview

• Camps are open to students from all parts of Alabama and the United States. We also welcome applications from international students.
• The high school camps are offered to rising sophomores through seniors (i.e., those currently in 9th-11th grades during Spring 2012). A middle school camp is available for rising 7th-9th graders.
• All camps are taught by UA faculty and staff in our College of Engineering labs.
• Both commuter and dorm-based options are available. Those students from outside of the commuting range to Tuscaloosa may reside in our dorms throughout the week (high school camps only).
  
• The camps begin at 9am and end at 4pm each day of the week. Students will be given an hour lunch break with planned social events for those staying in our dorms.
  
• Seating restricted to 25 students per week; please apply early.

Important Dates

Currently, week 1 of the high school camps is closed and we are no longer accepting registration for HS-1. The weeks for middle school, as well as weeks 2 and 3 for high school, are still open (please note that weeks 2 and 3 for high school do have a pre-req of Java knowledge). If you register after May 1, please send an email to gray@cs.ua.edu to mention your registration. An invitation to the camps will include information about payment of tuition.
